If you are a hospitality professional, you are probably aware that professional lighting has an impact on how your establishment is perceived.

Lighting is a subject that requires great attention to detail, as it must be adapted to the type of establishment and the atmosphere you wish to convey. Lighting a bar is very different from lighting a restaurant. Whatever your establishment, Barazzi has been a recognised supplier of professional lighting for 15 years and will be able to assist you with your design project.

Why light each area differently?

Your restaurant, bar or café is not a homogeneous block. It is a set of areas that you have defined, each with its own role. In concrete terms, the room creates a general atmosphere but may already have differences. For example, the lighting you use to illuminate a table for 10 people with families will not necessarily be the same as that chosen to illuminate a table for 2 people on a date. Why? Quite simply because the desired atmosphere is not the same: couples will be looking for a more intimate atmosphere.

Then you have other rooms, and you will certainly need:

  • Lighting for the bar.
  • Lighting for the terrace.
  • Lighting for the kitchen.
  • Lighting for the toilets.

Because all these rooms require different things. Ultimately, each area is defined to create a certain atmosphere or to be effective.

Lighting for restaurants

Lighting for restaurants should immerse your customers in a welcoming and consistent atmosphere while showcasing your dining room, furniture and dishes. To achieve the result you want, our best advice is to combine several light sources (lighting layering) rather than relying on a single light source.

First, you can purchase a designer pendant light or a ceiling light to create the overall atmosphere. These are essential for lighting, but also for decoration. On the one hand, they provide light that is well distributed throughout the room, and on the other, they set the tone for your establishment. Once this general lighting is installed, you can complement it with designer wall lights or accent lighting to add depth.

Barazzi's advice: For a restaurant dining room, we recommend choosing warm lighting (around 2700K) to promote a convivial atmosphere. It is also always a good idea to choose light fittings with a high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) (>90) so that the colours of the food remain appetising. In terms of intensity, a base of 150 to 300 lux on the tables is the recommended standard in the hospitality industry to ensure visual comfort.

Bar lighting

Do you serve cocktails or have bottles you want to showcase? If so, bar lighting will be very important. Unlike a restaurant, where clarity and intimacy are sought after for dining, a bar is more of a place of shadows and contrasts.

Here, a large designer pendant light or a row of pendant lights above the bar counter is often our customers' first choice. And that's normal because, in fact, this vertical lighting defines the transactional space and showcases the work of the bartenders. For the rest of the establishment, uniform lighting is to be avoided. On the other hand, you can use wall lights with directed beams (up/down) to sculpt the walls and wireless lamps on the high tables to create areas of privacy.

Barazzi's advice: In a bar, we recommend using light sources with a very warm colour temperature (2200K) to give your customers a beautiful complexion, which will make them happy to take photos in your bar.

A little tip: install indirect lighting (LED strips) under the counter edge or at the foot of the walls to give the furniture a floating effect, while maintaining a low lighting level (around 50 lux) that is conducive to nightlife.

Terrace lighting

Installing terrace lighting is a great way to transform your daytime space into a night-time venue that your customers will love. If you have a terrace, having light sources is essential. However, these will vary depending on your outdoor space. For example, if you have a wooden terrace, a beach terrace, a pool terrace or a covered terrace, the lighting must be adapted to the materials and layout of the space to ensure safety and aesthetics.

For a wooden terrace, we recommend using recessed spotlights or small floor lights. If you have a covered terrace, a suspension light for covered terraces is an excellent choice: it allows you to recreate an outdoor living room by providing a central, warm light source.

For more open areas, wall lights are essential for marking out facades and securing access points. Finally, to add a touch of flexible design, floor lamps for terraces (often wireless or battery-powered) allow you to move the light around as needed, near a dining table or next to a pool terrace light.

Barazzi's advice: The choice of outdoor terrace lighting depends above all on the reflectivity of your floors. A dark wooden terrace absorbs more light than a light-coloured stone terrace, so you will need to provide slightly higher intensity (around 150 lux) to maintain good visual comfort. We also recommend that you ensure that each patio light has an adequate protection rating (IP65) to withstand humidity and water splashes over time.

Lighting for toilets

Too often overlooked, toilet lighting is nevertheless a major indicator of standing for a luxury establishment or a gourmet restaurant. In this confined space, lighting must fulfil three objectives:

  • Ensure impeccable visual hygiene.
  • Ensure the safety of users.
  • Provide a flattering reflection in the mirror.

On the last point: who hasn't been to a restaurant toilet to look in the mirror? It happens often, especially if your establishment is conducive to romantic encounters.

And it's important to your customers, so flatter them with the right lighting!

For effective general lighting, recessed ceiling lights or LED spotlights are the most common solutions. However, to add a more sophisticated touch, installing a wall light on either side of the mirror is preferable to overhead lighting, which creates unsightly shadows on the face. The current trend is also towards the use of indirect LED strips concealed behind mirrors or under skirting boards for a modern floating effect.

FAQ: Your questions about lighting fixtures for professionals

Should I choose LED lighting fixtures or traditional bulbs?

LED lighting fixtures consume 90% less energy than traditional bulbs. Barazzi offers LED lighting for lower energy consumption and a longer lifespan.

Should I use the same lighting throughout my establishment?

No, absolutely not. The lighting in the dining rooms will not be the same as in the bar or toilets, as we are simply not looking for the same atmosphere or the same objective. However, it is still important to maintain consistency within the establishment.
